Wisconsin Right to Contraception Act Introduced
Bill Enshrines Right to Contraception in Law
Madison, Wisconsin
Today, Senator Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton) and Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) introduced the Wisconsin Right to Contraception Act, a bill that would establish a statutory right to obtain and use contraceptives in the state. The bill comes in response to the recent Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated the constitutional right to abortion.
"This bill is crucial to ensure that people in Wisconsin have continued and unrestricted access to contraception," said Hesselbein. "Access to contraception is essential for reproductive health and autonomy, and this bill will help to protect these rights."
The Right to Contraception Act would:
- Establish a statutory right to obtain and use contraceptives without interference from the government
- Prohibit discrimination against people who seek or provide contraception
- Ensure that health insurance plans cover contraception without cost-sharing
The bill has been endorsed by a wide range of organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood, and the National Women's Law Center.
